  1. Install the Local REST API Plugin in Obsidian

    • Open Obsidian and go to “Settings.”
    • Navigate to “Community Plugins.”
    • Browse/search for “Local REST API.”
    • Install and enable the Local REST API plugin.
  2. Copy Your API Key

    • In the Local REST API plugin’s settings inside Obsidian, find and copy your API key.
  3. Find Your Vault Name

    • In Obsidian, open your vault.
    • The vault name is displayed at the top or can be found in “Settings” > “Vault.”
  4. Determine the API URL

    • By default, it’s usually https://127.0.0.1:27124 (HTTPS, recommended).
    • If you configured the plugin differently, use the URL and port shown in the plugin settings.
  5. Add Environment Variables via the FastMCP Connection Interface

    • Click the “Install Now” button to start the connection setup.
    • In the FastMCP interface, fill in the required fields:
      • OBSIDIAN_API_KEY: Paste the API key copied from the plugin.
      • OBSIDIAN_API_URL: Paste the URL (usually https://127.0.0.1:27124).
      • OBSIDIAN_VAULT_NAME: Enter your vault name.
  6. Save and Complete Setup

    • Save your configuration and finish the setup process in FastMCP.

You have now supplied the necessary ENV values for the Obsidian Semantic MCP Server.
