Create an Octagon account
- Open https://app.octagonai.co/signup/?redirectToAfterSignup=https://app.octagonai.co/api-keys and sign up or sign in.
Generate an API key
- After logging in, open the left menu and go to API Keys.
- Click Generate a new API key (or equivalent).
- Copy the API key value immediately (it may only be shown once).
Open the FastMCP connection interface
- Click the “Install Now” button you already have to open the FastMCP connection / environment variable editor.
Add the environment variable
- In the FastMCP interface’s environment variables section, add a new entry:

OCTAGON_API_KEY - Value: paste the API key you copied from Octagon

Save and restart the MCP
- Save the FastMCP configuration and restart or redeploy the MCP server (or restart your MCP client) so the new env var is applied.
Verify the setup
- Option A (local test): run the MCP command with the env to test locally:
env OCTAGON_API_KEY=your_octagon_api_key npx -y octagon-deep-research-mcp - Option B (via your MCP client): trigger a simple deep-research query (e.g., use the octagon-deep-research-agent with a short prompt) and confirm responses succeed.

Security & maintenance
- Treat the API key as a secret. Do not share it publicly or commit it to source control.
- If the key is exposed, revoke it in Octagon’s API Keys page and generate a new one.
