Integrates with NCBI PubMed to provide literature search, article retrieval, author-based searches, citation formatting in multiple styles, and research trend analysis for academic and bibliographic research workflows.
  1. Open the FastMCP connection interface and click "Install Now"
Open the FastMCP / FastMCP-connection panel where you add environment variables and click the "Install Now" button to begin adding the required ENVs.

  2. Prepare the two required environment names to fill in the form
In the FastMCP Install/connection form fill these exact keys:

    • PUBMED_API_KEY — (value: your NCBI API key)
    • PUBMED_EMAIL — (value: a valid email address to identify your requests to NCBI)
  3. Create or sign in to your NCBI / My NCBI account
If you don’t already have an account, create one (My NCBI); otherwise sign in. Then open your Account Settings page and locate the "API Key Management" section. (eutilities.github.io)

  4. Generate the API key
In the "API Key Management" area click “Create API Key” (or similar). A unique API key string will be generated and displayed — copy that exact string now (you’ll paste it into FastMCP in the next step). (eutilities.github.io)

  5. Paste values into the FastMCP form and save/install

    • For PUBMED_API_KEY paste the copied NCBI API key string.
    • For PUBMED_EMAIL enter the valid email address you use for NCBI identification (e.g., your.email@example.com).
After entering both values, confirm/save the form in the FastMCP connection interface and complete the Install process.
  6. (Optional) Note about key replacement and rate limits
Only one API key is typically associated with an NCBI account; if you create/replace a key the old key is inactivated. Using an API key increases default request allowance (commonly to 10 requests/sec for NCBI APIs); if you need higher/“enhanced” limits follow NCBI instructions and contact the addresses they provide. (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

  7. Test the connection
After Install finishes, run a small test query (for example a single simple PubMed search) through the MCP server to verify the PUBMED_API_KEY and PUBMED_EMAIL are working correctly. If you get rate-limit or authentication errors, re-check the key string and email in the FastMCP interface and regenerate the key from your NCBI Account Settings if needed.
