Open the FastMCP connection interface (the form that appears when you click “Install Now”).
This is where you will enter the environment / connection values for the MCP server.Obtain an OpenRouter API key
- Sign up or log in to your OpenRouter account (openrouter.ai) and open your dashboard. (openrouter.ai)
- Go to the “API Keys” (or “Keys”) section and create a new API key: give it a name and (optionally) set a spending limit. The key string will be shown only once—copy it now and store it securely. (openrouter.ai)
Choose the model ID to use
- In the OpenRouter dashboard or the OpenRouter models listing, find the exact model identifier to use (for example the README’s example model is deepseek/deepseek-r1). Copy the model ID exactly as listed. (openrouter.aosa.me)
Fill the FastMCP connection fields
- In the FastMCP form, set the API key field to the OpenRouter key you copied. (If the form labels the value as apiKey, paste the key there; if it expects an env var name, use OPENROUTER_API_KEY.) (openrouter.ai)
- Set the model field to the model ID you copied (for example: deepseek/deepseek-r1). (openrouter.aosa.me)
Save / Install
- Click the Install/Save button in the FastMCP interface (the same “Install Now” flow) to store the ENV values and start the MCP server connection.
- Keep the API key secret (do not commit it to source control). If the key is ever exposed, revoke it and create a new one from the OpenRouter dashboard. (openrouter.ai)
(Optional) Verify
- After installation, confirm the MCP server starts and can be contacted by your client (e.g., Cursor) using the configured model and API key. If you see authentication errors, double-check the pasted API key and model ID. (openrouter.ai)
